THE GREENBACK NIGERIA EXECUTION
Related to country: Nigeria

The Greenback project considers the following challenges and contigencies for the execution of the GHG emmisions for the 10 schools in Abuja.
-As 5months which is needed for the first phase is quite long, we will be admitting volunteers for each month,in case of a volunteer default.
-As financial assistance is needed for printing of the education packs, letters and proposals will be dispatched to prospective funders before start of project.
-Time management might pose a great deal of threat to this project as schools time table might vary, as such arrangements are been made even outside school to meet with club members.
-Communication between members will be encouraged by using the greenbacknigeria website, web-sms services, and also posted on the Greenback Nigeria page on facebook and twitter.
-The Greenback Nigeria Project will be using its website to promote eco-friendly products, organization, and states that are helping to get a sustainable future, as such we might be in need of a part time volunteer that will be responsible for environmental audits.

GREENBACK NIGERIA: PROBLEM STATEMENT
Related to country: Nigeria

No one sat down and made a plan to change the climate. There was no international conference where where massed campaigners lobbied leaders into an historic agreement that the globe needed warming. No one complained that sea levels were too low, that there was way too much ice, that rainy seasons were too long, and extreme weather patterns wren't extreme enough.

Climate change happened when we weren't looking. When we were concentrating on other things-like keeping warm, getting from A to B, enjoying being able to consume more and more...

But if we can now see that climate change is here, most of us stll dont quite believe it. OK,few of us remain climate change deniers, but we still rarely feel the immediate connection between the CO2 emmisions of the industralised world and, say people in some part of Africa, experiencing desert encroachment at a faster rate, thus making farmlands and grazing grass invisible. We dont quite believe there could be a link between heating our homes and heating the planet, between taking the car to the shops and Drought.

Thats why the world really does need a plan. Not to change the climate, but to slow the rate of change and enable those already affected to adapt to the new world, which they didnt choose. And to kickstart a new path to prosperity-sustainable development-where people who have yet to make poverty a distant memory can leapfrog into a low carbon future.

The entire semi-arid zone of Nigeria lies approximately between Latitude 110N and 140N and is affected by desertification. It has consistently suffered most from all recorded drought episodes in Nigeria’s recent history. The situation is being aggravated by the increase in human population, which appears to be stressing the natural support system.

Between 50%-75% of ten Northern States(Bauchi,Borno,Gombe,Jigawa,Kano,Katsina,Kebbi,Sokoto,Yobe and Zamfara States). are been affected by desertification and droughts;and these states account for about 40million people and 38% of Nigeria's total land area.90% of cattle population emanates from these states and 60% of export crops (cotton, groundnuts, gum arabic, rice and wheat) come from this zone;and it will be pertinent to make it clear that 70% of Nigerians depend on cereals that are been cultivated in these Northern States.

The Pressure of migrating human and livestock populations are absorbed by neighbouring states such as Abuja, Plateau, Adamawa, Taraba, Niger, Kwara and Kaduna.10-15% of their land area are also been threatened by desertification.

According to the recent Nigeria Human Development Index (2009),the Human Poverty index of these Northern States remains higher when compared to others.

In many areas, sustainable-yield threshold of the vegetation and soils are being breached.Today, the problems of desertification in Nigeria are now being addressed in a holistic manner to ensure that the semi-arid zone continues to support the human and natural resources.

After more than three decades of actions to combat the menace of desertification in the country, it remained intractable, primarily due to the impacts of climate change, poverty and inadequate awareness among the people and the other stakeholders.

GREENBACK NIGERIA: BACKCASTING AND SCENARIOS
Related to country: Nigeria

Yadai, a village in Kano state of Nigeria, always have sand been blown around by the hot wind, as such production of crops like millet, beans, and peanuts have been cut to a bearest minimum and people from the village do migrate to other towns for survival. At present this is history in the city of Yadai, there is a green shop situated in the heart of Yadai, where youths of the village do go to seek advice and knowledge about global issues affecting them; a whole lot of trees has been planted in Yadai, and the Greenback Nigeria project in collaboration with UNEP has constructed a solar plant in Yadai to generate 5,000megawatts of electricity.

Mr Abubakar, is a social worker, is working on effective groundnut production in the Northern Nigeria, he walks over 50km to get an internet connection to do research, but with the Greenshop in place, he can quickly access the internet, get a green tea at the shop to drink, then discuss global issues with the teeming youth population in within the community.

Adelight Nigeria Limited started manufacturing low-energy light bulbs six years ago; at its inception, the company has basically 100 wholesale distributors, and its return over investment was at negative. The company got a leap from the Greenback Nigeria website which helps in promoting environmentally friendly products to be purchased, thus creating an increase in demand for its low-energy light bulbs after the companies bulb was listed on the eco-friendly products segment of the website.

A whole lot too can be said about Viceze Couture that is interested in using environmental fabrics in producing its clothing. It was tagged has the most environmental friendly fashion outfit in Nigeria on the Greenback Nigeria website, and since then its customer base has increased tremendously.

The Northern part of Nigeria have woken up to the issue of environmental sustainability with over 200 schools taking part in the Greenback club program, 300 schools has been admitted into the Greenback Nigeria project. The Greenback Nigeria website has over 10million Nigerians signed up as members. The Earthwalk that was held was supported by corporate organizations with 1million Nigerians taking part.

Moreover there are now about 20 greenshops spread around the northern part of Nigeria, with over 200,000 been trained in vocational skills and ICT applications,50,000 visitors have used the resource center of these green shops and are pretty satisfied with the level of services been offered at the greenshop.

Since Greenback Nigeria website has started rating organizations on there level of awareness about a sustainable environment culture (environmental impact auditing), a number of organizations have started showing interest in the environment; however, Greenback Nigeria still reiterates its commitment towards visiting organizations (private or public) to ascertain how much they do intimate their workers on making the environment sustainable.

GREENBACK NIGERIA:FUNDING ECOSYSTEM
Related to country: Nigeria

Greenback Nigeria takes a holistic approach into climate change and sustainable living by going from the class to the field;however, at start, when the club members will be working through their education pack, funding will be restricted to communications and volunteer, but when action (local, national and international) is to be taken, then we will be looking at big funding - these includes public enlightement, tree planting, greenwalk, ads, technological support.

Recently, the Ministry of environment in Nigeria raised alarm on 40million lives that are been endangered by desertification. Thus it becomes imperative for the ministry to create an awareness on this menace, which is exactly what Greenback Nigeria is initiating, as such we hope the climate change unit of the federal ministry of environment will be willing to fund this project.

Nestle Foods, is one of the corporate bodies in Nigeria that is involved in environmental programmes in Africa, they already have a programme in Ghana, and we feel they are prospects to funding the Greenback project.Their in-kind donations will be welcome.

United Bank of Africa, UBA are also involved in environmental issues. so they become one of out target for funding.

However, with this, we might be facing challenges in the area of antecedence, this will be our first time on a project like this, as such corporate organizations might be discouraged in funding.

In as much as we know this, we will be synergizing with other NGOs that has taken part in this environmental programme, one is Husts Global.
